I try to express the extent of custom bookbinding succinctly, so that I can offer custom orders, build photo albums, even do rebindings for people who just don't know how to visualize a medium they're not familiar with. This is every one of us. Including myself. It's hard to imagine something totally new crafted from a few humble materials. And, so I often find myself stumbling to organize the possibility into a set of choices: size, color, materials, goal.
Binding books can take me on many different kinds of journeys. Because of the custom nature of projects, those journeys are sometimes very personal. There was a time that I printed a book of life lessons from a father to his graduating son and daughter. There was another time that I bound a set of letters from children to mark the birthday of 60-year-old parents. And this-most recently-a time that I was honored to help publish a set of 15 Romanian language poetry books, the clients' memorial of an old friend.
